“The birds on Midway are like messengers, the canary in the coal mine. When the canary dies, the miners don’t run over and try to save the canary— they receive the message that bird just gave its life delivering, and then act quickly to save themselves”

HUMAN NATURE Connections – Whitewater River Kayaking with Christie and Drew

For the fourth entry in my HUMAN NATURE Connections Project I’d like to introduce Christie Glissmeyer and Drew Eastman, both are whitewater river kayakers and they are a newly engaged couple who live in Hood River, Oregon.  When Christie first heard about my project through her talent agent at Sports and Lifestyle Unlimited she wrote the following to me to describe how she connects with nature.

“I’m a kayaker, and I connect with the the natural environment through water. I ride the river currents, cascading through deep mossy gorges and dense forests of the Pacific Northwest. I’m immersed in thundering waves, navigating through the chaos of rapids and plunging over falls. My perfect moment is pushing away from shore and floating towards the horizon line of a waterfall. The world falls away it’s just me and the river, tumbling through the mist into a crystal clear pool below. For an instant it’s dark, cold, and eerily calm. Then I resurface, gasp for a breath of air and look up to see the powerful wall of water towering above me.”

We met to make some photographs at the top of Snoqualmie Pass at a stretch of the South fork of the Snoqualmie river they call “Fall in the Wall”.  It is a 1/4 to 1/2 mile stretch of river that is only run-able when the mountain runoff is high enough, usually late Winter and Spring.  This year, with all the snow pack it was still good to go in mid July. These are some of the photos we made on two runs down the river. I was trying to capture the feeling Christie described in her initial note to me. There will be a short video including some GoPro video footage shot from the front of Christie’s kayak coming soon!

HUMAN NATURE CONNECTIONS – This is “Just Sage”

Posted in Creative Process, Creativity, photography with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 15, 2011 by Tim McGuire Images

This is Sage who responded to my initial “call out” for people to work with on my HUMAN NATURE CONNECTIONS project.  Sage wrote to me, “I am a avid stilt walker (both pegs & bio mechanical) and enjoy cross country stilting. I recently experienced a stilting adventure in Tillamook, Oregon where I stilted in, over, and around natures obstacles along the outer coastline on my bio mechanicals…the experience was very rewarding physically as well as spiritually”.

I thought the idea offered a very different  (kind of zany) slant on what most people would envision when reading my initial blog post.  I must admit this included myself. So after meeting Sage, who just happened to be living across the street from me, I decided to go with it and see what we could come up. I think we made some unique and interesting photographs showing one persons unique connection with nature.

We shot these photos on various trails in the Quinault rain forest near Lake Quinault in the southwest part of the Olympic peninsula in Washington state.

Thanks for sharing your nature connection with us, Sage!

Here is the first set of images from my Human Nature Connections project.  This is Sonya.  She connects with nature through hiking. She especially loves hiking the trails of Mt Rainier National Park in Washington State.

These photos were made in one day on Tiger Mountain East of Issaquah, Washington off I90  and the Little Si trail near Northbend, Washington.

Enjoy!
